Located on Kempenfelt Bay, that is a segment of the large Lake Simcoe situated within Central Ontario, is the fast-growing city and a dynamic waterfront community of Barrie. Originally, the First Nations People used this area as a main resting point as they moved through the portage which ran across Lake Simcoe and Nottawasaga River to Lake Huron.

Barrie has developed a strong tourism trade, because of the city's convenience and its nearness to Kempenfelt Bay, where the waterfront of Barrie has played a vital role. There are numerous attractions and tourist activities based around the beautiful Kempenfelt Bay. In summertime, visitors can enjoy boating, windsurfing, swimming, or any different water sports from the city's beaches, consisting of Centennial Beach, Minet's Point Beach, Tyndale Beach, The Gables and Johnsons Beach. During wintertime, Kempenfelt Bay becomes home to lots of fishing huts as fishing enthusiasts flock so as to enjoy winter fishing at the bay. Fishing nonetheless, is a year-round activity within Barrie. Fishing enthusiasts will be happy to fish at Little Lake or at the Kempenfelt bay shoreline, either during summer or winter, and try their luck in catching a Walleye, Whitefish, Perch, Bass, and Lake Trout. A fishing license must be acquired first before anyone more than 18 can fish in the bay.

The city could draw many visitors to its arts and cultural events, though Barrie City might have been known for its wide variety of family and outdoor recreational activities. The Kempenfest arts and crafts festival is the most celebrated of these, where visitors can find lots of Arts, Crafts and Antique exhibits with live entertainment. The festival is held on the August long weekend and attracts over 300,000 tourists yearly. Some famous city festivals include the Barrie Kiwanis Music Festival, Barrie Jazz and Blues Festival, Barrie Dragon Boat Festival and the Railways Blues & Bluegrass Festival.

Barrie has a diverse financial system, with the sales, manufacturing, service, and transportation sectors as the city's largest and strongest companies. Growth within the construction, utilities, business services, finance, trade, food and accommodation, health services, and education sectors are expected in the next 10 years.
