The Loran Award supports promising young Canadians who show strength of character and a commitment to service in their communities, challenging them to fully realize their leadership potential. In 2023-24, the Loran Scholars Foundation will offer up to 160 financial awards funding studies on Canadian campuses at the following three levels:

LORAN AWARDS

With the support of a national network, up to 36 Loran Scholars are provided with:  an annual stipend and tuition waiver to enable their capacity and availability to engage with and contribute to their new communities; a comprehensive, thoughtfully-developed leadership enrichment program including a variety of summer work experiences, immersive learning in different parts of Canada and abroad, skills and capacity building; membership in a community of values-driven individuals, including a diverse network of past and present scholars, one-on-one mentoring, and annual retreats and forums for high potential youth to interact and learn from one another. 

  • Loran Scholars may pursue undergraduate studies at the following universities only: Alberta, British Columbia (UBC), Calgary, Dalhousie, Guelph, King’s, Laval, McGill, McMaster, Manitoba, Memorial, Montréal (UdM), Mount Allison, New Brunswick (UNB), Ottawa, Queen’s, Saskatchewan, Sherbrooke, Simon Fraser, Toronto (UofT), Toronto Metropolitan, Waterloo, Western, Victoria, York.
  • Loran Scholars must meet university and program admission requirements. To renew the award, Loran Scholars must maintain a B+ (77%) CPGA under a full course load, live independently, including in university residence for the first year of study, and demonstrate growth in character, service, and leadership. 

FINALIST AWARDS

Up to 54 one-time awards valued at $6,000 offered to finalists not selected as Loran Scholars for use at any public Canadian university.

PROVINCIAL & TERRITORIAL AWARDS

Up to 70 one-time awards valued at $2,000 offered to top candidates chosen by interview committees, for use at any public Canadian university.

Please note: Semi-final interviews are online. For students without Internet capability at home, we will work with them to secure a location where they can access the Internet. If we are unsuccessful, they will be interviewed by phone. National Selections are held in Toronto and all costs associated with travel and accommodations are covered by Loran.

Eligibility Criteria for High School Students

  • Be entering university for the first time in September 2024.
  • Present a minimum cumulative average of 85%.
  • Hold Canadian citizenship or permanent resident status.
  • Be born between January 1, 2002 and September 1, 2008.
