During the year 1972, the District of Sumas merged with Abbotsford, which made the city the District of Abbotsford. In 1995, the District of Abbotsford amalgamated with the District of Matsqui that in turn becomes Abbotsford City.

The unique urban setting of the Fraser Valley and its land areas provide varied outdoor adventures and experiences. The Matsquio Regional Park can be a haven for camping, biking, fishing and hiking. It could likewise be a great site to do some parachute jumping to be able to see a bird's eye view of the whole Fraser Valley. The Circle Farm Tour gives the tourists the opportunity to be able to explore local agricultural operations and find out more concerning the origins of food.
