Applications that do not meet the eligibility requirements will not be considered for a scholarship award. Incomplete applications will not be considered for a scholarship award.
Eligibility
- Children of active duty, retired or deceased U.S. Army all ranks personnel, who are currently high school seniors.
- Applicant must be planning to attend a non-profit, post-secondary institution in a degree or certification program as a full-time student for the 2026-2027 school year.
- Applicant must have a minimum 3.0 grade point average.
- Scholarship award will be revoked if the applicant does not attend the post-secondary institution or receives a full scholarship from elsewhere.
Residency requirements
Both the applicant and the sponsor must reside in or be deployed from one of the following cities or counties in the Greater Washington Area:
- District of Columbia
- In Maryland, the counties of Anne Arundel, Calvert, Charles, Frederick, Montgomery or Prince George's
- In Virginia, the counties of Arlington, Fairfax, Fauquier, Loudoun, Stafford or Prince William or the Cities of Alexandria, Fairfax, Falls Church, Manassas or Manassas Park
Application requirements
- Fort Myer Thrift Shop High School Senior Scholarship Application and Agreement form. Complete, print and sign the form (print document above). Both the applicant and sponsor must sign the form. If the sponsor is deceased or deployed on an unaccompanied assignment, the applicant's other parent or guardian must sign the form in place of the sponsor. Printed names will not be accepted.
- Applicant’s military dependent ID card. A readable photocopy (front and back) of the applicant's military dependent ID card. Applicants should check the expiration date as expired ID cards will not be accepted.
- Official transcript. Include an official transcript from the high school attended by the applicant. Official transcripts must be in a sealed envelope and signed by a school official. If the institution requires that the transcript be sent directly to the Fort Myer Thrift Shop, the transcript should be mailed to the address listed below. All transcripts must be postmarked no later than April 23, 2026, or the application will be considered incomplete.
- SAT or ACT scores. The applicant's SAT or ACT scores may be included if those scores are not reported on the applicant's official transcript. The applicant may submit a printed copy of their scores from the College Board or ACT website if the printed web page clearly shows the applicant's full name alongside the scores. Handwritten or typed in names added to the printed SAT or ACT webs score page will not be accepted.
- List all high schools attended on one page. Include a list of the names and locations of high schools attended by the applicant.
- Awards and activities one-page summary. A list of honors, awards, and activities to highlight the applicant's academic achievement, community involvement and leadership potential. This information may include academic or non-academic awards or recognitions; membership in organizations and positions held in such organizations; participation in service or community projects and internship or employment experience during the applicant's high school years.
- Essay. An essay of no more than two (2) double-spaced pages in response to ONE of the following questions:
- As a military family member, what experiences influenced you to pursue a post-secondary education?
- Cite two or three accomplishments/experiences which you feel have prepared you for a post-secondary education.
- How will your a post-secondary education help you pursue and achieve your career goals?
- Letter of recommendation. One (1) letter of recommendation from a school official, counselor, teacher, present or former employer, or community leader. The letter of recommendation must be in a sealed envelope and must include an address and telephone number at which the person writing the letter can be reached. The writer should identify the applicant by name once in the introduction of the letter and then use "he" or "she" throughout the remainder of the letter. No additional letters of recommendation will be considered.
