For the 2024 fall semester Morehead State University (MSU) will be offering 2 Black Achiever Scholarships valued at full tuition. To be eligible for one of these prestigious scholarships, applicants must meet the following qualifications:

  1. Be unconditionally admitted to MSU as an entering freshman or as a transfe student with less than 24 total semester hours.
  2. Be a legal resident of Ohio.
  3. Have completed the Black Achievers Program in Cincinnati, Ohio.
  4. Submit a completed Undergraduate Admissions Application Packet (admission application form, applicable transcript(s), test scores (ACT or SAT) and a completed Black Achiever Scholarship Application post marked by the December 1, 2023, priority deadline.

Applicants should submit their application materials as early as possible to ensure consideration, as funds are limited for these prestigious, highly-competitive scholarships. 

Recipients of the Black Achiever Scholarship will be selected after the December 1, 2023, application deadline. All applicants will be notified in writing of their application status after final review of applications has been completed. Please note that finalists will be contacted for an interview.

The Black Achiever Scholarship may be received for a total duration of 8 consecutive semesters if the recipient maintains a minimum cumulative 3.00 MSU GPA, maintains continuous fulltime enrollment with MSU for fall and spring semesters, participates in required programs accompanying this scholarship (DREAMS and Student Brand Ambassadors), and requires on campus housing for at least 4 semesters.

Resume:

Attach a detailed resume. This should include:

  • Leadership roles you have held at your high school or in your community, including your responsibilities/duties in the position(s)
  • Awards and recognitions (YMCA Black Achievers Program, Governor’s Scholars Program, Governor’s School of the Arts, Rogers Scholars, etc.) with a brief description of each
  • Any advanced courses (AP, Honors, IB, etc.) and/or college course work you have completed or expect to complete before Fall 2024 with description of the course

Short Answer Question:

Compose a response to the following question and attach it to this application. Please note that grammar, punctuation and spacing/formatting are very important elements. Your response must be typed in 12-point font and double-spaced with appropriate sentence and paragraph structure.

According to the Kentucky Department of Education, some economically disadvantaged and underrepresented minority students score significantly lower than their non-economically disadvantaged and majority peers. This is commonly referred to as the achievement gap. If money and resources were no object, what would you recommend to close those gaps to ensure that these students are successful?

Essay:

Letter of Recommendation:

Submit one letter of recommendation from your principal, teacher, guidance counselor, coach, professional mentor, or community leader. The letter of recommendation must be at least one page in length and should comment on the applicant’s character, integrity, intellectual ability. Family members and personal friends may not provide letters of recommendation. Recommenders must submit their letter on letterhead in a sealed envelope with their name written across the seal. The letter of recommendation must be at least a typed page in length.
