Emile H. Mathis II Scholarship

Each year, Boreal Waters awards more than $800,000 in scholarships to support students across northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin. Made possible by the generosity of individuals, families, and organizations, these scholarships help learners of all ages pursue education, unlock opportunity, and give back to their communities.

Most of our scholarships are available through our universal application which will open in December 2025 and close February 24, 2026.

Emile H. Mathis II Scholarship Fund

The Emile H. Mathis II Scholarship Fund recognizes the life and career of University of Wisconsin-Superior alum Emile Mathis and supports the education of future generations of UWS artists. The scholarship is available to all who will be or are degree-seeking students in the Visual Arts Department at UWS. Emile Mathis was a UWS graduate who opened the Mathis Gallery and Frame Shop in Racine, Wisconsin. He developed a talent for collecting unique prints, from Rembrandt to Whistler. Funds generated by this collection helped create this scholarship.

Eligibility

Eligible applicants must be graduates of any high school within the DSACF service area, homeschool, or hold a GED. They must be pursuing a bachelor’s degree in the Visual Arts Department at the University of Wisconsin–Superior and demonstrate financial need.

Award Range

$2,500 a year, up to 4 years ($10,000 total)
