Situated within Fairfield County within Connecticut, United States, the city of Stamford is a bustling city with a population of roughly 122,643. As of 2010, it is the 4th largest city in the state of Connecticut and the 8th biggest city in New England. The city of Stamford is a part of the Bridgeport-Stamford-Norwalk Metro area.

The Metro-North Railroad is a commuter rail system utilized for metropolitan NYC, travels via the New Haven Line through Stamford. These trains provide faster travel into Stamford City. Within one hour drive of Stamford are a total of six major airports such as the Newark Liberty International Airport, that is located inside New Jersey and the John F. Kennedy International Airport, which is located within the state of New York.

The region around current-day city of Stamford was once referred to as Rippowam by the native area residents. The very first European settlers also used this name until it was later switched to Stamford, a name which is derived from a township in Lincolnshire, England. On July 1, 1640, Chief Ponus and Captain Turner of the New Haven Colony signed the deed to the city of Stamford. Because of the city's nearness to New York, the main industry of the city of Stamford during the 18th century become merchandising by water.

Even if it wasn't as famous as the Salem witch trial, the city of Stamford had its own witch trial in 1692. Although the accusations were not as fanatical as those which were thrown around in Salem, they grew to prominence through gossip and hysterics.

New York residents began to construct summer homes on the shoreline during the late 19th century. Some even transferred there permanently and commuted by train to Manhattan, though this practice did not become commonplace until much later. During the year 1893 Stamford was incorporated.

There are numerous company head office situated in Stamford, including a large amount of the Fortune 1000, Courant 100 and Fortune 500 companies. Amongst the biggest headquarters that are situated in the city of Stamford are World Wrestling Entertainment, Pitney Bowes and Tasty Bite. Also, Stamford is home to the Norther American Head office of UBS. The Royal Bank of Scotland runs its North American operations from the city, such as its RBS Greenwich Capital subsidiary.

There is high rental costs in Stamford, that forced a lot of large companies outside the city, such as Xerox, MeadWestvaco, International Paper, GE Capital, Clairol and NBC have transferred their offices outside of the city.

There are numerous university campuses located within the city of Stamford, such as the University of Connecticut, the University of Bridgeport, and Sacred Heart University. The University of Connecticut's campus was opened in 1998 within a large, newly renovated building downtown, that was the big Bloomingdales store former home. The two other university campuses are situated in the River Bend Executive Center, which is Fairfield County's leading information and communication center. All these are commuter campuses.
