The city of Fort Collins, Colorado is situated along the Cache La Poudre River. The city is classed a Home Rule Municipality. Situated along the Colorado Front Range, Fort Collins serves as the county seat and biggest city of Larimer County. The 2010 census listed the populations as approximately 143,900 making it the 4th most densely inhabited city within Colorado state. Fort Collins City is situated 57 miles or 92 kms north of the city of Denver, Colorado's state capital.

The city is 55 miles northeast of Boulder, Colorado. The city of Fort Collins is nestled along the Rocky Mountain foothills. Colorado State University or CSU, is situated in the city of Fort Collins as well, hence it is a largely populated college town.

Initially, the city started out as an army post like its name suggests. In the beginning it was called "Camp Collins," in honor of the commander of Ohio Cavalry troops who were headquartered at Fort Laramie under Lt. Col. William O. Collins. During the year 1864, a devastating flood almost destroyed the first army post. The existing site of the city of Fort Collins was picked to be the site of the new military operation. The new post was named Fort Collins. In 1867, the fort was decommissioned but a new town still emerged. During 1873, the new town of Fort Collins was officially incorporated.

Six years after that, another important milestone was achieved with the opening of the Colorado Agricultural College. This would eventually become Colorado State University. Originally founded as the only land grant institution within Colorado, CSU has become a major part of the city's recreation and culture as well as being the largest employer within the city of Fort Collins.

There is a balanced economy within Fort Collins along with a highly educated labor force. The manufacturing base consists of businesses like Water Pik, Hewlett Packard, Anheuser-Busch and Woodward. The research resources and facilities at CSU have attracted various hi-tech firms to the area. There are offices for Intel, Avago, LSI, AMD, National Semi-Conductor and Pelco located within the city. In addition, agri-tech and clean energy businesses are likewise part of the economy.

Among the various companies within the city' manufacturing base, they produce goods like for example scientific instruments, aircraft components, measuring and collecting instruments, industrial chemicals, communications equipment, solar technology, Smart Grid technology, turbines and bio fuels.

The city's major non-agricultural sectors for employment consist of Healthcare, Transportation and Utilities, Education, Government, Professional and Business Services, Trade, Manufacturing, Leisure and Hospitality.

Over the past decade, the biggest employers within the city of Fort Collins have been Poudre Valley Health System, CSU, Avago Technologies, Hewlett Packard, Larimer County, Agilent, Poudre School District, City of Fort Collins, CO and east Kodak.
