Based on the Census of 2010, the city had a population of 510,365 making it the biggest inland city in the state, the fifth biggest city in the state of California and the 34th biggest city in the States. The city of Fresno is located 274 km or 170 miles south of Sacramento, the state capital, and 322 km or 200 miles north of the city of Los Angeles. The population of the city is around 1,107,416. The name Fresno came from the Spanish language word that translates to ash tree. Because of this, the flag of the city of Fresno features an ash leaf.

At present, Fresno is one of the 40 most densely inhabited cities within the country. The city has a rapidly growing metro area with an estimated population of 430,000 residents. The three billion dollar agriculture business in Fresno County makes it the top county for agriculture in the USA. Some of the main crops are cotton, lettuce, grapes and tomatoes. The city of Fresno has more than 250 crops. The economy is likewise supported by other industries like food processing, glass and plastics, agricultural chemicals and equipment and computer software.

Within the Central Valley of California, the city of Fresno is the main economic factor within the area of agriculture, a sector of the economy which provides the city of Fresno with nearly 25 percent of the work in the region. It is projected that 1 in 3 jobs within the area are agriculture related, making the County of Fresno amongst the most well-known agricultural counties in the country. The most important crops are milk, cattle, peaches, turkeys, grapes, plums, cotton and tomatoes.

The main non-agricultural employment sectors are Utilities and Transportation, Government, Health Services and Education, Trade, Finance, Construction, Leisure and Hospitality, Manufacturing, Construction and Business and Professional Services.

The manufacturing sector in Fresno has an abundance of jobs in a variety of fields like for instance farm machinery, stone, glass products, metal products, transportation equipment, furniture and wood products. The agricultural technology and irrigation sectors offer many jobs. Other sectors consist of flexible food manufacturing, agricultural technology and advanced logistics. There are a lot of call centers also employing a portion of the workforce.

There are many cultural attractions and facilities found in the city of Fresno, like for example the Fresno Ballet and the Fresno Philharmonic Orchestra which are hosted the Saroyan Theatre. The theatre got its name from William Saroyan, a Fresno-born author and poet. The Fresno Grand Opera is one more attraction along with a variety of local theatre companies and dance and music productions. The museums within the region consist of the Fresno Metropolitan Museum, the Fresno Art Museum, the Discovery Center and the African-American Museum. Every October, the city hosts the annual Blues Festival within the Tower District, located under the famous namesake water tower. Each springtime, the Conours D'Elegance is held at California State University in Fresno and this is the most anticipated antique auto show within the US.
