With a population of 446,901, Oakland is considered the eighth biggest city in California and the 41st biggest city in the United States. It is the County seat of Alameda county, and the center of activity for the sub region of the Bay Area, East Bay. It is situated just eight miles east of San Francisco and has the West Coast Port located on the San Francisco Bay. Oakland covers a total of 78.2 square miles, with 22.1 square miles being water and the other 56.1 square miles covering land.

The cities terrain is broken down by the people into "the hills" and "the flatlands", with the residents in the hills generally being richer. Roughly a third of the population has settled in the hills and foot hills, whilst the others reside in the flat plain of East Bay.

Lake Merritt is one of the main attractions of Oakland, since it is close to downtown. Within the US, this lake is considered to be the largest (urban) salt water lake, even though it is really a San Francisco Bay estuary.

Various people who settle within Oakland are attracted to the cities gorgeous Mediterranean weather conditions, characterized by mild winters and warm summers. Due to its site, it is normally warmer then San Francisco and cooler then San Jose. At times, the northern part of the city experiences a cooling maritime fog, but the city is far enough inland so that the fog burns off by mid day.

As the city is a major West Coast Port, Over 200,000 jobs in the city are connected to cargo transport. Additionally, the companies Matson, Kaiser Permanente and Clorox have facilities in the city. Various businesses have decided to build their headquarters here, like for example Dreyers and Cost Plus World Markets. Oakland was likewise home to the very first London Drugs.

Oakland went through a population surge during the early 21st century. There was a new 10K plan which was implemented, that saw an influx of residents; precipitated thousands of new multifamily residences were made to accommodate them. This population surge can be attributed to the cities mild climate, as well as its somewhat central location in regards to bigger cities. Oakland provides a reasonable alternative to property prices and ski high rents within San Francisco, and provides beautiful views of the San Francisco and the Bay from its hillside neighbourhoods. Due to its expanding population, there has been some shopping districts constructed and an assortment of restaurants that reflect different international and native cultures.
