Santa Clarita was just named the sixth safest place to live within the United States (among cities with a population over 100,000) by the FBI. Furthermore, Money Magazine ranked it 18 of the top 100 places to live in 2006. The city was incorporated in 1987 and combined the communities of Saugus, Valencia, canyon County and Newhall. Downtown Los Angeles is around 35 kms southeast of Santa Clarita. When seen on a map Santa Clarita forms a distinctive triangle shape because of the intersection of the Antelope valley (SR-14) and Golden State (I-5).

Situated in the northern and western parts of the city is the Enterprise Zone, that includes the commercial and industrial areas. On the 1st of July, the year 2007, it was zoned specifically to offer tax incentives to companies who built there. Now, 97 percent of all commercial, business, and industrial zoned land is situated within the Enterprise Zone. Some large companies have chosen Santa Clarita as their base, such as Condomman.com, Salt Creek Grille, True Position technologies and Trigg Laboratories.

The economy within Santa Clarita is mostly based off of the service trade. Almost 41% of all companies are in the service sector. Retail holds roughly 21% of the financial system, and the rest is divided equally amongst the finance, insurance, real estate, and construction businesses.

Santa Clarita is a city which is mainly comprised of smaller businesses since just 5 percent of the companies comprise more than 50 workers. Roughly 59 percent of businesses within the city comprise fewer then five staff. Businesses that employ between 5 and 9 workers count for around 19%.

Companies in Santa Clarita do not take up a lot of space because of their small roster of employees. Around 36% of businesses take up less then 2,500 square feet and 46% of businesses are in locations between 2,500 and 9,999 square feet.
