Waterman, a clippership captain, in 1859 after his hometown in Fairfield, Connecticut. Less then eighteen miles away from Fairfield is Napa Valley and about twenty four miles away is Oakland. The Benicia Bridge and the Carquinez Bridge are also located nearby. (15 and 13 miles, respectively) Fairfield shares a border with Suisun city.
