Fort McMurray is a community within the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, Alberta, which is considered amongst the biggest municipalities within North America. Fort McMurray remains a designation used by Canada Post for mail delivery within this area. Fort McMurray is a multicultural community, and it draws people from all walks of life. Most of the migrants in the city are Albertans, followed by 17 percent of people for Labrador and Newfoundland province.

The Cree peoples were the first known settlers of Fort McMurray. The Cree were the most dominant First Nations people within the area and it was believed that they usually used the oil sands so as to waterproof their canoes. The first European explorer of the area was Peter Pond, who came to the region to look for fur. The explorer, Alexander MacKenzie made the first recorded description of the oil sands during the year 1790, and by that time, the explorers and Crees were already happening between them. The community has played a key part in the history of the petroleum business in Canada, since oil exploration has been existing in the region for as early as the 20th Century.

Fort McMurray Tourism provides several oil sands tour packages from May to September each and every year. During summertime, Fort McMurray city offers wilderness adventure packages, kayaking, and canoeing, whilst during winter, visitors can select from taking a snowmobile tour or watch the breathtaking northern lights, go fishing and lodging in lodges. Other than oil, Fort McMurray City also relies on natural gas and oil pipelines, tourism and also forestry. The two largest oil sand mining businesses within Fort McMurray are Syncrude and Suncor Energy. Several businesses, include forest protection services, drilling rig services, refineries and sawmills are considered economic players within Fort McMurray city.
