Glendale is a city in the county of Maricopa within Arizona State. Glendale is 14 km northwest of Downtown Phoenix and presently has a population of nearly 230,000 people.

Sports are essential within Glendale. The Arena is a location for the NHL's Phoenix Coyotes and NLL's Arizona Sting, who began playing within the city of Glendale when the arena opened during the year 2003 in Westgate City Center. The team previously played at Sun Devil Stadium on the campus of Arizona State University in nearby Tempe. The new University of Phoenix Stadium is the home of the NFL's Arizona Cardinals and a college football bowl game, the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl. The stadium was designed by architect Peter Eisenman and has a natural roll-out grass field. The 2008 Super Bowl XLII was played there. The Glendale Sports and Entertainment District is a development intended to encourage growth in the Yucca district of Glendale.
