Cochrane is a town in the province of Alberta, Canada. The town is located 18 kilometres west of the Calgary city limits along Highway 1A. With a 2009 population of around 15,400, the town of Cochrane is the second biggest town within Alberta and one of the fastest growing communities in the country. It is part of Calgary's Census Metropolitan Area and a member community of the Calgary Regional Partnership or also known as CRP. The town is bordered by Rocky View County.

The name "Cochrane" is derived from Senator Matthew Henry Cochrane, who in 1881 established the Cochrane Ranche. The Canadian Pacific Railway granted the town site in 1885 and named it to honour Senator Cochrane, but some people made the town of Cochrane their home in spite of the surrounding ranching population.

In 1903, the hamlet of Cochrane officially became a village. The 1906 population of the village was just 158 inhabitants. Five years afterward the village boasted a population of 395 residents.

Situated within the Bow River Valley, Cochrane is situated at the base of Big Hill, at an elevation of 3,891 ft. or 1,186 metres. Intersecting the town of Cochrane are highways 22 and 1A. The reputation of the town of Cochrane is more about its western culture, that is fairly noticeable when roaming through the local roads. The town is a popular location for coffee and ice cream in its pretty western-oriented stores along with for golfing, hiking, windsports in addition to other adventure activities.
