Little Rock is the biggest city and the capital of Arkansas State within the United States. It is the county seat of Pulaski County. The MSA or Metropolitan Statistical Area had 699,757 inhabitants in the 2010 census. This statistical area included the Little-Rock-North Little Rock-Pine Bluff, Arkansas Combined Statistical Area which, based on the census of that very same year had roughly 877,100 people residing there. This number registered as the 47th largest combined statistical area in the US. Little Rock itself had a population during 2010 of 193,524 inhabitants making it the 118th largest city in America.

The city of Little Rock is situated on Arkansas River's banks. The southern banks of the Arkansas River boasts a tiny rock formation and stone outcropping that provides the city its name. This particular rock formation is known as la Petite Roche, that is French for "little rock." Little Rock itself is located near the geographic center of the state of Arkansas. Early river traffic and travelers used the "little rock" as a landmark and this eventually turned into a well established river crossing. La Petit Roche was named by French trader and explorer Jean-Baptiste Benard de la Harpe. This area marked the transition to the flat Mississippi Delta region from the Quachita Mountain foothills.

Prior to the European arrival, Native American tribes have occupied the region for many many years all-around Central Arkansas. There are many archaeological artifacts found in the area which supports these findings. Among the original settlers in the region comprised Bluff Dwellers, the different Mississippian culture civilizations who constructed many earthwork mounds which were recorded by Spanish explorer Hernando De Soto's expedition in 1541. Furthermore, the Folsom people likewise have evidence of settling the area. Some historical tribes from the region consist of the Caddo, Cherokee, Osage, Choctaw and the Quapaw.
