Montgomery, Alabama is located within the south-central part of the state on the Gulf Coastal Plain along the Alabama River. The city has an estimated population of roughly 205,000 and serves as the capital city of Alabama and the county seat of Montgomery County. The city of Montgomery is the second-largest city within the state (the city of Birmingham is the biggest). The Montgomery Metropolitan Statistical Area has a population of roughly 375,000, making it the fourth-largest MSA within the state.

In the year 1819, two towns along the Alabama River merged to become the city of Montgomery. Around 30 years later, Montgomery became the capital state. The shift of state government to this particular region of Alabama acknowledged the importance of producing cotton. For some short months during the middle part of the-1800s, Montgomery was chosen as the capital of the Confederate States of America, quickly losing out to the city of Richmond, within the state of Virginia. Montgomery won a place for itself in the African-American rights history as the site of the crucial Montgomery Bus Boycott and Civil Rights marches.

Regional and state government offer a significant portion of Montgomery's employment. Government agencies give around 25% of the local employment. The Maxwell Air Force Base is also extremely essential to the local economy. Besides military and government, significant employment derives from the following sectors: healthcare, wholesale and retail trade, agriculture, construction, insurance and finance, transportation, utilities, professional and business services, leisure and hospitality, manufacturing and education. High-tech manufacturing businesses located in the city comprise the Hyundai Motor Manufacturing plant. Montgomery is home to two public universities: Auburn University-Montgomery and Alabama State. Montgomery is a major agricultural crops processing center. Primary crops grown within the region consist of cotton, peanuts and soybeans. The city is likewise a major regional distribution and wholesale center.

The Montgomery Zoo is a premier attraction within the city, accommodating 700 kinds of animals. In the year 1989, the zoo expanded to over 48 acres. The Mann Wildlife Learning Museum is a large natural history museum located at the zoo. Housing a vast selection of North American wildlife, the museum displays allow viewing from all sides. Montgomery has the oldest fine arts museum in the state of Alabama, The Museum of Fine Arts. Founded during 1930, the museum has educational programs and temporary exhibitions, along with Southern regional art, a fine collection of American paintings, decorative arts and Old Master prints.
