North Bay City is situated within the rugged geological landscape of the Canadian Shield, some 330 kilometres north of Toronto. The name North Bay is derived from its geographical position on the northern part of Lake Nipissing. North Bay City is the seat of Nipissing District.

The city of North Bay sits between the Ottawa River watershed to the east and the Great Lakes Basin to the west. The urban center of the city is located along lake Nipissing's shoreline. The smaller Trout Lake is on the city's opposite side.

North Bay is more and more gaining attention for its active cultural scene. Lots of musicians, writers, actors and artists choose to reside there. During the year 2004, Studio 2 (a TVOntario program) chose North Bay City as among the top three most creatively famous cities within Ontario.

North Bay enjoys a rather diverse economic base for a northern Ontario city. The service industry, tourism, and transportation play important roles in North Bay City's financial system. Primary industry companies, like forestry, are also important. The biggest employment sectors are government, health and education. Many find jobs in the post-secondary education sector, at North Bay's Canadore College and Nipissing University, that share a campus in the city's west end and together enroll about 7,000 full-time students.

Called CFB North Bay, the North American Aerospace Defence Command control centre is situated within North Bay City. Originally, the operations were situated within an underground facility. However, the operations were relocated beside the entrance to the underground facility at the David L Pitcher Building. Now, CFB North Bay hires around 500 air force and support workers. A Canadian Force Army Reserve unit, called the Algonquin Regiment, A Coy, is likewise located within North Bay City.
