The city of North Battleford is a unique community. It is considered the gateway to Northwest Saskatchewan's outdoor adventure. Before the white settlers arrived, Battle River was known as the "Fighting River" that marked the boundary between the Cree Territory and Blackfoot. Strong aboriginal presence, consisting of Chief Poundmaker and Big Bear have greatly shaped the Battlefords. Their influence has left a continuing legacy of aboriginal culture in the Battlefords. History reveals that the very first fur trading post happened in Battleford in the year 1785. North Battlefield was incorporated as a village in 1906. It became a town in 1907 and a city in 1913.

Many within the region consider Battleford as "a four season destination." The Fort Battleford National Historic Site and the Western Development Museum are two places where visitors and residents can go to to learn more about the history of the city. People who like arts and crafts can show their creativeness at the Saskatchewan Handicraft Festival. Individuals who truly love cowboys and horses can go to the Kinsmen Indoor Rodeo.
