The city of North Battleford is a unique community. It is considered the gateway to Northwest Saskatchewan's outdoor adventure. Before the white settlers arrived, Battle River was known as the "Fighting River" that marked the boundary between the Cree Territory and Blackfoot. Strong aboriginal presence, consisting of Chief Poundmaker and Big Bear have greatly shaped the Battlefords. Their influence has left a continuing legacy of aboriginal culture in the Battlefords.
