The small city of Swift Current is situated in the southwest part of Saskatchewan along the Trans Canada Highway. The city is situated 170 kilometres or 110 miles west from Moose Jaw, and 218 kilometres or 135 miles east from Medicine Hat. Swift Current grew 0.8% between 2001 and 2006 ending up at 14,946 residents. The city is surrounded by the Rural Municipality of Swift Current No. 137.

The city of Swift Current has a long history which started with Swift Current Creek that originates at Cypress Hills and winds its way across 160 km or 100 miles of prairie, flowing through Ried Lake along the way and emptying into the South Saskatchewan River. First Nations people knew it well and camped alongside its banks for hundreds of years. The name of the creek has its own history, and over time has evolved into what we know now as Swift Current.
