Saskatoon has been an inhabited area for roughly 6,000 years, and it was not until the summer of 1883 that the first settlers started to arrive and reside within the area. Saskatoon is taken from the name 'mis-sask-quah-toomina', the Cree Indian name for a local indigenous berry. It is situated at the central province of Saskatchewan, Canada, on the banks of the South Saskatchewan River. The city was incorporated during the year 1906, and now, Saskatoon is one of the biggest cities with a projected population of 210,000. The city of Saskatoon is among the sunniest cities in Canada, with four distinct seasons varying from warm summer months to the coldest winter months.

Saskatoon's major arts venue is TCU Place, which is located beside Midtown Plaza downtown. This venue has hosted various concerts, theatrical performances, live events, high school graduation, conventions and university convocation ceremonies ever since the year 1967. The Credit Union Centre is the main site used for rock concerts and major shows. Considered Saskatchewan's largest arena, it could house in a capacity of approximately 14,000 for concerts and 11,500 sporting events. The Saskatchewan Children's festival, Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan Festival, the Jazz Festival, and Saskatoon Folkfest are some of the other cultural events that are held every summer. The city also has an event called "Cruise Weekend," which is held on the last weekend of the month of August. Activities include dances, poker derbies, and a show n' shine which showcases more than 800 cars throughout western Canada. In the year 2007, Saskatoon hosted Canada's foremost music industry honours, the Juno Awards.

Live theatre is also a part of Saskatoon's culture. It is host to some live theatres, like for example Saskatchewan Native theatre Company, Off Broadway Centre, Persephone Theatre and The Refinery. It is likewise home to performance groups, which consist of: Saskatoon Gateway Players, Live Fire, Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan, Troup du Jour, and Saskatoon Summer Players. Movie fans can choose to go to one-single screen theatre - the Broadway Theatre, a haven for arthouse films. Roxy Theatre is an "atmospheric-style" second-run theatre which reopened in the year 2005 after not being utilized for more than a decade. The rest of its theatres are multiplexes.

Saskatchewan is the primary grower of almost half of its entire quantity of export crops, such as flaxseed, rye, wheat, canola, and oats. Its thriving farm sector. Mining is also an essential industry which contributes to the region's economic growth, along with uranium and recoverable potash. Apart from this, value added food processing is considered to be among the rapidly growing industries within the city of Saskatoon, which is considered to be the "Agriculture Biotechnology Capital" of Canada. In 1995, Globe and Mail was named amongst Canada's best cities for knowledge based industries.
