The second biggest city in Utah State, with a population of around 129,500 as of the 2010 census, is West Valley. The city of West valley is a suburb of Salt Lake City and is situated within Salt Lake County. Before it was incorporated in the year 1980, the area consisted of four separate communities: Hunter, Granger, Chesterfield, and Redwood. The USANA Amphitheatre and Maverik Center are located within the city.

The earliest known residents of the Salt Lake Valley area, are the Ute and Shoshoni Native American tribes.

During the year 1849, Dan Jones and the Welsh Latter-day Saints arrived to the state of Utah and settled the Granger region. Agriculture soon prospered and irrigation systems were developed. Elias Smith proposed the area's name due to it's successful farming. Occasionally, high alkali content made farming near impossible. During 1884, the Latter-day Saints split their group into two and formed a separate Granger Ward.

Shortly after the four communities of Granger, Hunter, Redwood and Chesterfield were incorporated as the city of West Valley a petition rose against them trying to eliminate the new city. The campaign was successful to the extent that it convinced the court system of the court to order a disincorporation election that occurred three months after West Valley City was incorporated. The election was very close, with just 72 votes which decided the outcome of West Valley City. In the past 20 years, the city of West Valley has thrived and continues to prosper and grow.

The Utah Cultural Celebration Center is situated in West Valley City and hosts an assortment of different music and cultural shows yearly. The E Center is another popular attraction. It was constructed in the year 1997 and hosted the 2002 Winter Games. The USANA Amphitheatre, the Hale Center Theatre and the Rocky Mountain Raceway are a few of the other attractions that are situated within the city of West Valley. Salt Lake City also has various attractions, including Ballet West, that is one of the leading ballet companies in the United States, the Off Broadway Theatre, that is renowned for its comedy shows, the capitol Theatre, which is home to Utah Opera Company and was constructed in the year 1913 and Wheeler Historic farm, which is home to a historic farm house.
