The city of Nashville, Tennessee is the state capital and also serves as the county seat of Davidson County. The city is located in the Southeastern United States along the Cumberland River. The City of Nashville has earned its reputation as a center for the music industry. There are also many colleges and universities located there. The region was initially settled by a group of Wataugans, frontier settlers during the year 1779. Nashville quickly grew in importance because of its port on the river, and later its accessibility via railway. Nashville was incorporated as a city during 1806 and became the county seat. During 1843 it was named state capital.
Nashville's cultural life benefits from the extensive university community. The university community has been extremely influential not just in Nashville, but nationally. The Agrarians and the fugitives were two groups of poets and literary scholars who were connected with Vanderbilt University in the early 20th century and had a major effect on culture.
