Sioux Falls (population 153,888) is a city within the state of South Dakota. It is the county seat of Minnehaha County. More than a quarter of South Dakota's total population lives in the greater Sioux Falls metropolitan area.
Settlement started in the mid-19th century when land speculators in what was then the Dakota Territory noticed the water power potential of the area along the Big Sioux River cascades. During 1876 Sioux Falls became incorporated as a town. In 1883 Sioux Falls was established as a city. This took place in the era of the railroads. Growth and prosperity accompanied the arrival of the railroad within the city of Sioux Falls. During the modern time, the economy of Sioux Falls was based on agricultural businesses.
