The city of Prince Rupert is situated on the North Coast of British Columbia. This port city has a present population of around 13,000 individuals, but is a transportation hub for the North Coast region.

Prince George is roughly 718 km from the city of Prince Rupert, while the Alaskan border is 48 kms north, and Terrace is east around 143 kms away. It could be conveniently reached by taking the Yellowhead Highway 16 down towards northwest coast of British Columbia.

The first record of human settlement dates back over 10,000 years. The area was initially established by the First Nation People and, prior to European contact, the inner harbor of the city was the most populous area north of Mexico. The Tsimshian Nation, the original territory of the ingenious First Nation tribe, reached from Kitasoo all the way to the mouth of the Nass River in the North to the Skeena River in the East, which is located just past the city of Terrace.

The founder of the city of Prince Rupert, Charles Melville Hays, dreamed of establishing the perfect port for marine trade, as well as sea and rail travel, on the island. He was the president of the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway Company.

The local economy rapidly grew as the city of Prince Rupert established it's two main export terminals. Along with economic prosperity came an influx of culture and tourists. Prince Rupert is considered the Gateway to the North and is located on Kaien Island, which was unpopulated until about a century ago. It has access to some of the most breathtaking view in the world.

Each year, there are many ocean-going freighters that pass through the deepwater harbour. Cargoes of grain, lumber, pulp, mineral ore, coal and sulphur are shipped globally from the city of Prince Rupert, and as the Pacific Rim trade grows the port's significance would increase too.

For the majority of the months throughout the year the people of the city participate in ocean sport fishing. The fishing season runs from late April to latter part of September, though big Chinook salmon, up to 60 lb., could be found until early part of August. From middle part of July to mid-October is the best time to catch Coho salmon, which are smaller then the Chinook but fierce fighters. Pink salmon can be found from middle part of July to latter part of August. In the year 1995 the globe's biggest chum salmon, weighing in at 35 lb., was caught. Halibut are also common here, as are Rockfish. Another famous hobby is crabbing for Dungeness crab.

The numerous rivers and lakes in the area provide great freshwater angling. The Skeena River is amongst these, providing Cutthroat, Dolly Vardan and Rainbow. The best time stretches from the early part of July up to mid-September.
