During the year 1972, the District of Sumas merged with Abbotsford, which made the city the District of Abbotsford. In 1995, the District of Abbotsford amalgamated with the District of Matsqui that in turn becomes Abbotsford City.

The unique urban setting of the Fraser Valley and its land areas provide varied outdoor adventures and experiences. The Matsquio Regional Park can be a haven for camping, biking, fishing and hiking.
