Summerside is a Canadian city with a present population of 14,500 people in Prince County, Prince Edward Island. It is the 2nd biggest city in the province and the principal municipality for the western part of the island.

The town of Summerside was officially incorporated on the first of April, the year 1877, and after that reincorporated on the first of April, the year 1995 as a city.

The cities largest business is the Canada Revenue Agency, that at its Summerside Tax Centre, administers the Goods and Services Tax or likewise known as GST.

The Slemon Park business park hosts a concentration of several aerospace and transportation businesses in former military buildings; Vector Aerospace Engine Services Atlantic repairs and overhauls Gas Turbine aircraft engines, Testori Americas produces interiors for aircraft and mass transit surface vehicles, and Honeywell manufactures and repairs parts for aircraft.

New Annon is a faraway district near Summerside, that is home to Cavendish Farms operations, Prince Edward Island's biggest private sector company. Cavendish Farms features two large processing plants in New Annan. The faraway community of Borden-Carleton has several significant businesses for Summerside residents, including McCain Foods Limited which operates a frozen foods processing plant.

Since the closure of CFB Summerside during the year 1990, the city of Summerside has been aggressive in courting new business opportunities and has created an Economic Development Office for the reason of encouraging investment in the city of Summerside.

The district all-around the city of Summerside was once home to the world's biggest concentration of Tame Silver Fox farms. This is highlighted at the Silver Fox Museum.

The city of Summerside is the only place in Prince Edward Island to operate an independent electric utility. After purchasing Charlottetown Light & Power during 1918, Maritime Electric consolidated electric distribution on the island. The company offered to take over the operations in the city of Summerside, but backed down after residents rejected several offers. The Summerside distribution grid has been linked to the Maritime Electric network ever since 1961.

Usually the majority of its electricity is bought from the nearby provincial electric utility, NB Power. During the year 2008, 76.5% of its power was obtained from NB Power. Though the Summerside Electric Commission has its own diesel turbine at the Harvard Street Generating Station which can operate for many days independently of NB Power's supply, it is only utilized in exceptional circumstances like for instance power disruptions with New Brunswick or parts of the Maritime Electric power system that feed the city.
