The capital of Prince Edward Island, Charlottetown, is the biggest city in the province with a population of about 33,170. It is likewise the county seat of Queens County. The town was named after Queen Charlotte, the wife of George III, and was incorporated during the year 1855. During 1885, the city of Charlottetown was designated as a city. The city has earned global recognition for being the hosting city of the Charlottetown Conference during 1864. This particular historical event is responsible for the creation of the original Canadian Confederation. Charlottetown changed it motto immediately after that to "Cunabula Fopederis", meaning "Birthplace of Confederation."

The city is situated on the southern part of Prince Edward Island on its namesake harbor. The harbor, that opens onto the Northumberland Strait, is formed from the intersection of three rivers. The city of Charlottetown is bounded by the Hillsborough (East) and the North (Yorke) Rivers towards the east and west.

The economy in Charlottetown is mainly driven by the public section. For the most part, the largest employers within the county are the federal, municipal and provincial government. Following close behind are healthcare providers and educational institutions. The technology sector has likewise been rapidly growing throughout the last decade, even if most of the workers work for call-centers. Light manufacturing, like machining, chemicals and biotechnology, also plays a significant part in the economy of the city. The downtown core of the city of Charlottetown features lovely, Victorian-esque design with several parks and walking trails. In September the year 2007, the city of Charlottetown opened a new cruise ship terminal with the hopes that Charlottetown would become a more famous place for ships passing through the Gulf of St. Lawrence.

The city is home to numerous famous attractions like the Province House and Founders Hall. The Province House hosted the Charlottetown Conference. Founders Hall offers an interactive trip through the history of the nation. It was once an old railway maintenance building, but it was redeveloped to be able to host this unique tour.

Nationally ranked art galleries and live theatres could be found at The Confederation Centre of the Arts. During the summer months, the Charlottetown Festival is held there as well.
