Shreveport, Louisiana serves as the seat of Caddo Parish though part of the city boundaries stretch into Bossier Parish. It is the third biggest city and part of the 4th largest metropolitan area within the state of Louisiana: the Shreveport-Bossier City Metropolitan Area with a population of almost 400,000. Shreveport is located along the Red River across from the city of Bossier on the other side. The two cities are known as "Shreveport-Bossier."

Within the area of Shreveport, the states of Texas, Arkansas and Louisiana join on a region called "Ark-La-Tex".

The town was officially settled by the Shreve Town Company which set up the township at the point of the Red River and the Texas Trail in 1836. The Texas Trail was established by travelers as an overland route to Mexico and then later to Texas. The newly-formed village was named Shreve Town in honour of Captain Henry Miller Shreve. The Captain was like a hero after leading US Army Corps of Engineer efforts to get rid of a lengthy stretch of debris clogging the river.

The township of Shreveport was incorporated during the year 1839, and in 1871 it officially became a city. Shreveport played an important role in the national oil industry during part of the 20th century. When the oil industry faltered in the 1980s, Shreveport's economy declined due to company closures, cutbacks and layoffs. Shreveport then focused its efforts on the service sector by developing riverboat casinos and preserving its historic landmarks. Today, it is considered a popular tourist place.

The change to a service economy encouraged a boom within the gaming industry. The famous riverboat gambling casinos provide an essential source of employment and revenue for the region. Casinos within Shreveport-Bossier consist of Eldorado Casino, Sam's Town Casino, Horseshoe Casino, Boomtown Casino and Diamond Jacks Casino. The city was Louisiana's 2nd most visited city next to the city of New Orleans (before Hurricane Katrina). The area is also known for horse racing. A major horse racetrack, Harrah's Louisiana Downs, is located in nearby Bossier City. Visitors can contact the Shreveport-Bossier Convention & Tourist Bureau for tourism info about the region, like for example events, attractions, restaurants and accommodations.

The area of Shreveport-Bossier is a commercial and cultural center. It supports a big shopping and entertainment complex referred to as the "Louisiana Boardwalk" which is situated across the river in Bossier City. The Boardwalk is a 51,000 m
