Woodstock, called "the Dairy Capital of Canada," is a city in southern Ontario situated along the historic Thames River. Woodstock serves as the county seat of Oxford County and is about 128 kilometres southwest of Toronto. Its population totals 35,480. Woodstock is known for its historic buildings. All of its original administration buildings have been preserved. Woodstock City is also called "The Friendly City."

Woodstock has been settled since the early 19th Century. Sir John Graves Simcoe, governor of what was then known as Upper Canada, decided that the area will make a good townsite in the year 1800. American immigrants from the state of New York were the first to settle there, followed by immigrants from Great Britain during the 1820s and 1830s. The population of Woodstock City in the year 1836 was 200. Less than a decade later, the population had soared to one thousand inhabitants living in two hundred houses. In the year 1851, Woodstock was incorporated as a town, and during 1902 the town was incorporated as the "City of Woodstock." The population at that time was almost 9,000.

The city's core, from Vansittart Avenue to Huron Street on Dundas Street, boasts lots of magnificent century-old buildings. Located there are the historic administration buildings, restaurants, banks and shops. Woodstock underwent extensive revitalization efforts throughout the 1990s. The main street has been rejuvenated with several unique shops, cobbled sidewalks and gardens.

Woodstock City draws visitors throughout the year for various events. Each and every summer, the main street is shut down for a mix of entertainment and retail sales during the yearly "Sidewalk Sales" celebrations. Amongst the biggest wood shows in North America, the Woodstock Wood Show, is held there each and every fall at the fairgrounds. A major event, the Canadian Farm Show, occurs in September at the north end of the city. The fair comes to Woodstock during late August. Victoria Day is celebrated with a parade along Dundas. Woodstock City is likewise home to seven-screen Galleria Cinemas, live harness racing and an OLG Slots.

The city of Woodstock recently constructed a County Administration Building across from City Hall since it is the seat of Oxford County. Woodstock City Council governs the city. There are four city councilors, two county and city councilors, plus a mayor. Woodstock City is part of the riding of Oxford.
