Port Hope is a city within Southern Ontario, Canada, roughly 109 kilometres east of Toronto and around 159 kilometres or 99 miles west of Kingston. It is located at the mouth of the Ganaraska River on the north shore of Lake Ontario, in the west end of Northumberland County. Port Hope's nearest urban neighbour (7 km to the east) is the Township of Cobourg, while between them and surrounding Cobourg is Hamilton Town. Since 1868, the town has been home to Trinity College School, which was previously situated in Weston, Ontario.

The region of Ganaraska River was once occupied by the First Nations natives of the area, calling it the river that flows through the town. "Garanaske" was the name of a Cayuga village which was situated on the existing townsite. The Cayuga, part of the Iroquois Confederacy, had migrated there from the state of New York during 1779, after suffering extensive damage as British allies at their homeland within the state of New York in the American Revolution.

The first European settlers to the region were the United Empire Loyalists, who came to Port Hope during the year 1793. They first called it Smith Creek after a previous fur trader. By the turn of the century, they had established some mills and a town plot. After the War of 1812, more settlers from Britain were wanted, and a better name was needed. After a brief fling with the name Toronto, the village was renamed during the year 1817 as Port Hope, after the Township of Hope of which it was a part, that in turn had been named for lieutenant governor of Quebec, Colonel Henry Hope. Port Hope was incorporated as a township in the year 1834.

Downtown Port Hope is popular as a shopping destination for specialty items and antiques and is widely regarded as among the best-preserved major streets in the province of Ontario. The city of Port Hope is served by a Via Rail station. It has a medical centre, a walk-in clinic, and a community health centre.

Port Hope has various industries. It is popular for having the largest volume of historic low-level radioactive wastes in the country. These wastes were created by Eldorado Mining and Refining Limited and its private sector predecessors, as a result of the refining process used in order to extract radium from uranium ore. Radium was utilized in "glow-in-the-dark" paint (like aircraft dial paint in WWII), and during the early treatment of cancer. The Eldorado plant also produced uranium, that could have been utilized in the Manhattan Project that created the first nuclear weapon. It continues to produce uranium fuel used for nuclear power plants, now under the ownership of Cameco.
