The city of Pembroke, Ontario is the largest urban center situated between the city of North Bay and the Ottawa, the national capital. It is situated within the Ottawa Valley where the Ottawa River meets the Muskrat River. The city serves as Renfrew County's seat. Pembroke City is easily reached through the Trans-Canada Highway.

Pembroke's economic mainstay has always been forestry and farming. Local companies make fiberboard, veneer, limber, plywood and hydro poles. Spin-off businesses comprise manufacturing of office furniture.

Numerous Pembroke inhabitants are working at nearby CFB Petawawa. The Chalk River Laboratories of Atomic Energy of Canada Limited likewise offers employment. Several On-Line Support call centres are also located within Pembroke City.

Pembroke is a well-known tourist spot due to its accessibility to Algonquin Park and the Petawawa and Ottawa Rivers. There are world-class white water rafting tours all around the city. Pembroke itself has numerous other tourists attractions for its visitors and residents to take pleasure in. A highlight is the Champlain Trail Pioneer Village and Museum that includes artifacts from pre-European times and manufactured products from different periods of Pembroke history. Guides in period costume add colour to the experience while providing interpretation for tourists. The museum consists of a schoolhouse, pioneer log home and church dating to the 1800s. Experience the Ottawa Valley settlers' way of life at the outdoor exhibits: blacksmith shop, woodworking shop, bake oven, smokehouse, sawmill, train station and carriage shed. A 1923 Bickle fire engine is on exhibit. Indoors, tourists will find historic displays of fancy parlor rooms, a doctor's examination room, general store, hair salon and much more. A replica of Samuel de Champlain's Astrolabe is another museum highlight.

The downtown sector of Pembroke is well-known for its various murals. There are around 30 mural which try to recreate Pembroke's history, from steam engines to logging.
