The town of Napanee is located in the eastern section of southern Ontario in the County of Lennox and Addington. The town is situated approximately 40 kilometres or 24.8 miles west of Kingston and sits of Bay of Quinte's eastern end. The current municipality called Greater Napanee was created by amalgamating the old Napanee Township along with the towns of Richmond, Adolphustown and North and South Fredericksburgh during 1999. Greater Napanee is co-extensive with the original Lennox County.

During 1784, the area was first inhabited by Loyalists, who arrived at Adolphustown on the 15th of June, the year 1784. Their landing site and spot of the very first Loyalist cemetery in the region has been preserved by the Loyalists. The original hamlet of Napanee was situated at the location of a waterfall on the Napanee River, and was first called Clarksville after Robert Clark, who constructed a grist mill there. Sir John Macdonald, the very first prime minister of Canada, practiced law in the town of Napanee.

The downtown area of the town of Napanee has experienced a recent revival and is home to some boutiques such as October's Clothing, Starlet and Serendipity Studio. Nearby are John's Restaurant, Len's bakery, The Loaf N Ale and Louie's Restaurant. Coffee Cravings, a gourmet coffee shop, sits on the corner of Dundas St E. and John St.

Within the uptown core, Giant Tiger could be found at the corner of Centre Street North and Industrial Boulevard. The Giant Tiger store features a 200-foot mural by Pierre Hardy. The community likewise consists of a Walmart, a Canadian Tire and a Home Hardware. A No Frills grocery store is located in the Napanee Mall, and there is a Metro grocery store, (previously the Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company, referred to as the A&P), down the road from the Napanee Mall.

The town features the Allan Macpherson House, that is an historic 1826 property and current day museum. As a previous major of the Lennox Militia, Allen Macpherson operated the town's grist, saw mills, distillery and general store. He served as land agent and post master, operated the very first local printing press and helped fund the establishment of numerous local churches and schools. The home sits on the Napanee River banks, that flows through the township.

The township's largest company is the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company plant. What's more, Dixie Lee Fried Chicken has its head office within the township of Napanee.
