They, along with other workers, started constructing the palisaded community which consisted of workshops, residences, barracks, and churches. By 1648, it became the home of about 70 Frenchmen, that is one-fifth of the entire population of New France. Huronia Museum and Huron/Ouendat Village offers active art programs, collections and exhibitions from history. Inside the Museum are archaeological collections and native art of the Ojibway First nations and the Quendats in addition to contemporary art of Georgian Bay. Georgian Bay lighthouses and marine heritage are likewise featured.
