The suburban community of Kanata is a main suburb of the larger Ottawa City. With more than 70,000 residents, the suburb is biggest in all of Canada. Kanata began as a planned community and was once a prosperous independent city. It merged into the city of Ottawa in the year 2001. Among the largest communities surrounding central Ottawa, Kanata is west of the Greenbelt.

The Kanata area was historically part of the Township of March, when settlers of European decent settled here in the early part of the 19th century. The area developed into an urban centre starting in the 1960s. Urban planner and developer Bill Teron obtained over 12 square km of land within the area with the goal of creating a model community. Teron's vision involved a combination of densities and residential and commercial properties. Influenced by the garden city movement, he designed Kanata with big open areas and a surrounding greenbelt. Teron divided Kanata into several communities, each having its own commercial core and distinct appearance. The areas were called Beaverbrook, Bridlewood, Glen Cairn, Hazeldean, Morgan's Grant, Kanata Lakes and Katimavik.

The Greenbelt consists of 203.5 square kilometres of green space wherein real estate development is strictly controlled. The majority of the land is owned and managed by the National Capital Commission or NCC. The remainder is controlled by severaldifferent private interests and federal government departments. The shape of the Greenbelt is like a crescent extending from Green's Creek in the east to Shirley's Bay in the west. It is located in Ottawa's boundaries.

Sports is significant in Kanata. The Ottawa Senators is a professional ice hockey team located in Kanata. The yearly Bell Capital Cup youth minor amateur ice hockey tournament is held there each month of December. The Kanata Stallions junior team plays at the Recreational Complex. With nearly 4,500 players, the largest sports club in Kanata is the Kanata Soccer Club.

Kanata Town Centre consists of various townhomes and a big shopping area called Kanata Entertainment Centrum. The AMC 24 as well as big-box stores and a shopping centre are situated there.
