Chesapeake City, Virginia is situated within the South Hampton Roads part of the Hampton Roads metropolitan area. The city of Chesapeake was formed after a political consolidation during the year 1963 of the former Norfolk County. The county had been around ever since 1691, when it was referred to as South Norfolk City. As measured by land area, Chesapeake is the 2nd biggest city by land area within the Commonwealth of Virginia.

The city is a diverse urban oasis. There are numerous miles of protected wetlands, farmland and likewise a huge portion of the Great Dismal Swamp. Chesapeake is situated on the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway. Chesapeake extends all the way from Hampton Roads harbor area, to its rural border with North Carolina and to the neighboring cities of Norfolk and Portsmouth. The city of Chesapeake has miles of waterfront residential, commercial and industrial property.

During 1963, Chesapeake was formed out of the amalgamation of the City of South Norfolk and the county of Norfolk. The regions history however, dates as far back as the early 1600s when the region was first settled. During 1775, the historic Battle of Great Bridge happened. This marked an early Revolutionary War victory for the United States troops over the forces of the British Royal governor, Lord Dunmore. Work started on the Great Dismal Swamp Canal in the year 1793. This canal opened up in 1805. It eventually experienced hard times and is currently a part of the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway.

The Hampton Roads metro area has a lot to provide its residents and visitors and Chesapeake is at the hub of the activity. The city of Chesapeake is situated just 15 minutes from Norfolk, 40 minutes from Colonial Williamsburg and 20 minutes from the ocean. Amongst the main attractions within Chesapeake include the historic waterway connecting the Chesapeake Bay to North Carolina's sounds which is called the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway; Chesapeake City Park, a 75-acre site which houses the Chesapeake Skate Park and holds the yearly Chesapeake Jubilee and Symphony Under the Stars.

The Chesapeake Arboretum is another attraction comprising 48-acres of trail systems, native plants and trees which meander through a mature hardwood forest. This arboretum is located within an 18th century farmhouse also. The Chesapeake Planetarium was the very first planetarium constructed by a public school system within Virginia State. The Dismal Swamp Canal Trail comprises an 8.5 mile long multipurpose trail that accommodates joggers, bicyclists, walkers, boat owners and horse owners. Deep Creek Lock Park is a different wonderful day trip with foot trails and pedestrian bridges to negotiate over heavily wooded sections.

One more location to take in is the Chesapeake Veterans' Memorial that commerates the sacrifice and service of the Chesapeake citizens who are serving in the military or who have served in any war before. The Great Bridge Lock Park is another 19-acre location consisting of picnic shelters, a huge play area, a foot trail, a 2-lane boat ramp and extensive areas for crabbing and fishing. A renovated contemporary art gallery which highlights both local and traveling exhibits referred to as Portlock Galleries at SoNo is a different fantastic place to go to.
