The city of Hampton is not a part of any particular county within Southeast Virginia and therefore is considered to be an independent city. Based on the last census, the population is 137,436. Located on the the Virginia Peninsula's southeastern end, the city of Hampton is one of the 7 major cities which comprise the Hampton Roads metropolitan area.

Hampton is located on the Hampton Roads Beltway and is home to the HRBT or the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel located on Interstate 64. This bridge-tunnel serves as the gateway to Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean from the eastern USA and its tributary rivers. It was initially opened during 1957 and was the world's first bride-tunnel. This gateway is the United States' biggest ice-free harbor. The HRBT was expanded in the 1970s. Even these days, this particular facility is the busiest and deepest in Virginia State.

The city of Hampton is considered amongst the earliest communities within the US, because it can trace its earliest origins back to the early 1600s. The township was a quiet trading post prior to the Civil War. During 1861, the area was part of the conflict, when the Confederate army burned the city to the ground, trying to stop the take over of the township by the Union troops. Out of the remains left afterwards, former slaves who were under a degree of Union protection, constructed the Grand Contraband Camp. This particular camp was the first self-contained African American settlement within the United States.

In the year 1952, Hampton received city status following a municipal consolidation. This consolidation resulted in Hampton incorporating the boundaries of a region previously called Elizabeth City County.

Hampton is a city with a lot of activities to both see and do. There are numerous historical, cultural and recreational attractions. For example, The Virginia Air & Space Center is the official visitor center for the Langley Research Center of NASA. Tourists can truly enjoy a virtual reality video on the pioneers of flying in a state-of-the-art set up. They can also see the Command Capsule of Apollo 12 that journeyed to the moon.

The Hampton University Museum is located on among the oldest African-American universities within the United States. At first, the University was the Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute. Their goal was to be able to educate black women and men who were set free and teach them trades and skills after the Civil War ended. In addition, the site is the place where Lincoln read his Emancipation Proclamation and is referred to as Emancipation Oak.

The Hampton History Museum, located within the downtown center, provides the history of the city. There are lots of costumed interpreters their to re-enact exhibits, helping to give context and significance to the exhibits. Another popular attraction is the Casemate Museum situated at Fort Monroe. This is the biggest stone fort ever to be built in the country. The Museum is one of the main attractions and chronicles the role of the Fort during the Civil War. It also contains the cell that imprisoned Jefferson Davis, the Confederate President.

One more downtown location is the Charles H. Taylor Arts Center. This structure was constructed during the year 1925 and served as the public library for Hampton for over 60 years. The building has undergone significant restoration and renovation. Today, it presents changing exhibits of the very best national, local and regional artists.
