Alexandria is an independent city situated within the Commonwealth of Virginia. The population as of the year 2009 was 139,966. The city is situated 9.6 km or around 6 miles south of downtown Washington, D.C. and is located on the Western bank of the Potomac River.

Similar to the rest of northern Virginia, present day Alexandria has been modeled by its nearness to the nation's capital. Many of the residents there are professionals working for the federal civil service, the US military or one of the many private businesses that contract to provide services to the federal government. Locally, the latter are referred to as "beltway bandits," named after the Capital Beltway which is an interstate highway which circles Washington, D.C.

The DoD or the United States Department of Defense is among the cities biggest businesses. Other large scale employers are the Center for Naval Analyses and the Institute for Defense Analyses. The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office moved 7100 workers from 18 separate buildings within nearby City of Crystal into a new head office within the city of Alexandria during the year 2005.

Old Town is the historic center of Alexandria. There is a big concentration of antique shops, theatres, boutiques and restaurants in this part making it a main tourist location. Several neighborhoods in Alexandria are walk-able, compact, high-income suburbs of Washington, D.C. In Virginia, the city of Alexandria is the 7th biggest and highest income independent city.

During the year 1695, the first settlement was established in what was at that time known as the British Colony of Virginia. There was a comprehensive Tobacco Inspection Law of 1730 which mandated that all tobacco grown within the colony should be delivered to designated public warehouses for inspection prior to sale. Among these local places that were designated for a warehouse was located on the upper Potomac River at the mouth of Hunting Creek. Because the ground at this particular site was unsuitable, the warehouse itself was established a half mile up river. Here the water ran deeper near the shoreline.
