West Jordan, Utah is an expanding suburb of Salt Lake City. It has a population nearing 103,500 inhabitants and is considered Utah's 4th largest city. West Jordan is located at an elevation of 4,330 feet on Salt Lake Valley's southwest end. The city of West Jordan was named after the Jordan River, which flow nearby. The city's limits stretch from the river's western bank and to the Oquirrh Mountains' eastern foothills. The Kennecott Copper Mine, that is the largest man-made excavation in the world, is where the city ends.

Brigham Young led his group of Mormon settlers to Salt Lake Valley during the year 1847. They discovered that the western desert within the state of Utah bore several similarities to the biblical lands and named the river after River Jordan, that is located within Palestine. During around 1849 West Jordan was established officially. Shortly after, during 1850, the saw mill business began. The mills, together with minding and agriculture, drove the economy throughout these early stages. The city of West Jordan was among the very first cities to establish a leather tannery west of the Mississippi River. Additionally, it was also amongst the first sites for the earliest air flights to the west. Utah was among the primary producers for sugar beet within the nation. Since the 1970's, West Jordan has experienced rapid growth.

Amongst the most famous attractions in the city of West Jordan is Gardner Village. It is a charming little area with numerous specialty shops lining the streets. The shops are situated in historic mills and homes, and there is even an old train station which has been converted into a candy shop. Additionally, there is a petting zoo and a day spa. There are numerous other attractions in the region, such as Gardner Museum, that features some historic buildings. Others consist of Rock Meeting House, Historic Sugar Factory and Kennecott's Bingham Copper Mine. The city of Salt Lake is home to the historic Temple Square.

Skiers from all over the world gather to the nearby resorts of Brighton, Alta, Solitude and Snowbird to experience the renowned Utah powder. Another popular attraction is Great Salt Lake. Presently it is in the works to revitalize downtown West Jordan. The aim is to transform it into a transit-oriented development named "Briarwood." The proposed plan suggests the Main park be expanded, indoor recreation center, a history museum, and a senior center be developed, and a huge courthouse constructed that would serve the whole Utah State Third District. It also suggests that the commercial area that is already run-down be knocked down and replaced by housing, a performing arts center, a hotel, a big library, office and retail space, a conference center, an education center, and a pavilion which will be the location of the planned light rail station.
