The Irving Convention Center was built in Las Colinas in the month of January 2011. The Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport is also inside the city limits.

The city was founded by J.O. Schulze and Otis Brown in the year 1902 around 50 years after the region was settled during the early part of 1850's. There were some other smaller communities that existed in the area, like Sowers, Kit Shady Grove, Finley, Union Bower, Estelle and Bear Creek, but they were all merged together to form the city of Irving in the year 1903. On April 14, the year 1914 the city was incorporated officially.

The two original founders of the city of Irving were both employed by the Rock Island, Gulf and Chicago Railway. After arriving within the area in order to survey a railroad route between the city of Dallas and the city of Fort Worth during 1902, they bought out the 80 acres that the British Family owned and began to develop the city. On the 19th of December, 1903 the first town lots were acquired at a public auction. In 1904, the post office from Kit was relocated to Irving.
