Midland is the county seat of Midland County with a small portion of the city reaching into Martin County. It is located on the Southern Plains and currently has a population of around 111,146. It is the principal city of the Midland Texas Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of July 1 2009, The Odessa-Midland, Texas Combined Statistical Area had a population of approximately 266,941. The residents of Midland refer to themselves as Midlanders.

In the year 1881, the city was established as a settlement near the midpoint along the Pacific Railroad between El Paso and Fort Worth. Midway was the initial name of Midland City, but was later changed because of another Texas city having the same name. The city of Midland is the childhood home of former President George W. Bush and laura Bush, the former First lady's hometown.

The city was originally a ranching and farming community. Nonetheless, the city's economy went through a huge changed when oil was discovered within the Permian Basin during the year 1923.

Midland has numerous attractions located nearby, such as: the Midland County Museum, Permian Basin Petroleum Museum, the Big Spring State Park, Confederate Air Force and American Airpower Heritage Museum and Museum of the Southwest Complex.

There are several wonderful parks situated within the city of Midland, including Tolbert Park, Trinity Park, CJ Kelly Park, Doug Russell Park, Fasken Park, and Halff Park. Additionally, there are numerous interesting museums with a detailed description of the history of the area, such as the Midland County Historical Museum and the Museum of the Southwest. There is also the American Airpower Heritage Museum, which houses over 50,000 artifacts from WWII. World class shopping is offered at The Midland Park Shopping Centre.

The administrative and management head office for the gas and oil industry of the Permian Basin, the largest oil producing region within Texas, is located within Midland. The country's energy industry is mainly influenced by the Permian Basin.

Midland features a lot of oil and gas related businesses, including legal, finance, data processing, accounting, marketing and engineering. The economy is also supplemented by ranching and agriculture industries.
