Denton is the country seat of Denton County and now hosts a population of around 120,000. The Oklahoma-Texas border is approximately 47 miles north of Denton and Dallas lies 49 miles southeast.

The University of North Texas, which is the largest university in Northern Texas, and Texas Woman's University are situated within the city of Denton and between the two of them host more than 45,000 students. The Texas Woman's University was initially a single-sex collage but in the year 1994 the institution became co-ed. Denton City is usually characterized as a college town due to the presence of these to universities.

Denton County was originally formed from a Texas land grant in 1846. Denton City was founded shortly after during the year 1857. The city was named after a pioneer and Texas militia captain, John B. Denton. The city of Denton was able to distinguish itself from the nearby areas by establishing the two state colleges.

The financial system inside the city of Denton is largely dependent on educational services as well as retail trade, health and social, and manufacturing services. These organizations alone employ more than 20,000 individuals. More than 12,000 jobs are provided due to the three educational institutes and the city employs approximately 1,300, of which three hundred are public safety employees. The Golden Triangle Mall is amongst the major sources of retail trade, which hosts over ninety specialty shops. The more significant businesses which have their head offices within the city of Denton consist of Jostens, Peterbilt and Sally Beauty Company.

Denton City hosts lots of festivals and events throughout the year. During Springtime, there is a Jazz and Arts festival within the city of Denton which draws thousands of people to the area. More than 300,000 people come to the yearly North Texas State Fair and Rodeo and the Jazz and Arts festival. Denton City was named as the "Best Music Scene" by Scene magazine in the year 2008. The Dog Days of Summer, Cinco de Mayo, the Fry Street fair and the Twilight Tunes are amongst the other popular yearly events. Racing fans are pleased to find that the Texas Motor Speedway is situated roughly 14 miles south and Denton Dragway is located around 5 miles north of the city.
