The main campus of Texas A&M University is situated in the city. College Station owes its name and existence to the railroad located nearby. The university is designated as a Land, Sea, and Space-Grant institution. At any one time there are some ongoing projects, financed by agencies like for instance the National Institute of Health, NASA, the Office of naval Research and the National Science Foundation, that are being researched at the University.

Money Magazine placed College Station in 2006, as the states most educated city, and ranking 11th in the whole nation.

The history of College Station is directly connected to the development of Texas A&M University. Texas A&M University was established during the year 1876 and was the first institution of higher education in Texas. As the university was quite isolated, the school administrators provided facilities as part of the college's infrastructure. As time went by, the area developed around the university. The Post Office designated the region "College Station" in 1877 based on the name of the train stop nearest the area. On October 19, 1938 the citizens of the growing community voted to incorporate the city. The Administration Building on campus was the place of the first City council meeting.

The largest employer within the city of College Station is Texas A&M University. Due to it's huge size, it plays a really vital role in College Station's economy. Some of the other businesses that are located within the city are Novartis, Pfizer, Hewlett-Packard, Schlumberger and Conoco-Phillips. The Research Valley provides a number of private and public sector jobs related to the homeland security, energy, information technology, and health/life science industries.

The main job sectors of the economy, includes food and accommodation services, healthcare, professional, educational services, and scientific and technical services. Approximately 45% of the labor force in the city is involved in management, professional, and connected occupations. Sales and office occupations make up approximately 22 percent of the jobs.
