The county seat of Collin County is McKinney, a city with a population second only to Plano in the area with a population of 131,117. The city has twice been named the nation's fastest growing city, most recently in the year 2006. During the year 2008, it was ranked as the third-fastest. CNN's Money Magazine ranked the city of McKinney the fifth best place to reside within the US during 2010. It was the only Texas city which made the top ten. The name of the city derives from Collin McKinney, who was a congressman for the Red River district of the Republic of Texas and signed the Texas Declaration of Independence.

In the year 1841, settlers from Tennessee, Arkansas and Kentucky were the first to locate to the area. The area was declared a county seat of Collin County in 1848. Within the same year the first post office was established. Joel F. Steward was named the postmaster. A year later the town was incorporated. On May 28, 1859, it was reincorporated as a city.

There are several attractions in or near McKinney City, such as: Wilson Creek Park, Collin County Youth and Farm Museum, Heard Natural Science Museum, Old Post Office Museum, Van Alstyne Museum, and the Dallas World Aquarium.
