The city of Clarksville likewise is the main central city of the TN-KY Clarksville metropolitan statistical area, that comprises Kentucky, Trigg County, Montgomery County, Stewart County, Christian County and Tennessee. This is the 10th fastest MSA or Metropolitan Statistical Area in the country.

In 1785, Clarksville was the first incorporated city in the state of Tennessee. The name comes General George Rogers Clark, a frontier fighter and a Revolutionary War Hero. He is also brother of William Clark of the Lewis and Clark Expedition.

Clarksville is home to Austin Peay State University. It is amongst the south's most historic cities. The Leaf-Chronicle, Tennessee's oldest newspaper is also from here. Moreover, the city of Clarksville is neighbor to Fort Campbell, the home of the 101st Airborne Division or Air Assault. This base is located roughly 10 miles or 16 km from downtown Clarksville and straddles the state line of Tennessee and Kentucky. Officially it is called Fort Campbell, Kentucky mainly because the base U.S. Post Office is located on the Kentucky side of the base although the majority of Fort Campbell is truly within Tennessee.

The town was founded during 1784, and then later incorporated during 1785. It wasn't until the 19th century that the township began to grow and prosper slowly. In time railroads, bridges, new roads and churches and educational institutions were constructed. Clarksville was incorporated as a city in the year 1855 and during the later part of the century the city developed a broad reputation for its production of dark fired tobacco. The economic growth of the city was closely tied to the farming business for many years. As the progression of the 20th century came, the County of Montgomery and Clarksville took on a more technology-based approach.

The major economic components of Clarksville include a strong manufacturing industry, a growing hospitality sector, Austin Peay State University and the Fort Campbell Army Post. Other important industries include printing, and manufacturing of air conditioning and heating units. The processing, advertising and farming of tobacco within the region also contributes to Clarksville's economy. The state's biggest business is Fort Campbell.

Among the most popular jobs in the city where most of the workers are college degree educated include: teachers, registered nurses, financial managers, computer systems analyst education administrators, pharmacists, school, vocational and educational counselors and manufacturing and wholesale sales reps.

The major employment segments in the city of Clarksville consist of Educational Services, Government, Construction, Healthcare, and Food and Accommodation Services.
