The biggest community within Ontario's Durham Region is the city of Bowmanville. Bowmanville City had it roots beginning when John Burk obtained the land, which was later sold to Lewis Lewis. Lewis afterward opened a local store that was bought by Charles Bowman, who built the towns very first post office. In the nineteenth century, the Crown granted a land program which resulted in the success of the Vanstone Mill. This consequently expanded the Bowmanville settlement, and local merchants usually sold small lands to support their small businesses. The town soon became economically balanced since it established itself as an average player within the rail transport, shipping, metal works, and various minor businesses.

Bowmanville enjoys various events and festivals, that include Fabulous Fifties Festival, Moonlight Madness, the Maple Festival and All That Jazz, Apple Festival and Craft Sale, and Moonlight Magic.
