The city of Columbia is situated 13 miles or 21 km northwest of South Carolina's geographic center. It is the main city of the Midlands region in South Carolina. This area consists of several counties within the central part of the state. The city of Columbia is located at the convergence of two rivers, the Saluda River and the Broad River which merges at the city of Columbia and forms the Congaree River.
The South Carolina General Assembly created the city of Columbia during 1786. The city's location was very important to the overall development of the entire state.
