The Southern Ontario city of Ajax, is part of the Regional Municipality of Durham and the Greater Toronto Area. The name of Ajax got its name from HMS Ajax, the World War Royal Navy cruiser. Previous to the name change, Ajax City was an agricultural area in Pickering. During the year 1941, Defence Industries Limited (D.I.L.) was constructed within the townsite that led Ajax City to develop around the plant.

The city of Ajax is brimming with artistic expression and diverse culture. Because it has a long heritage and history, its arts are intermingled with the cultural fabric of its community. Among the arts and cultural events in the city of Ajax comprise: Ajax on Stage! Youth Talent Showcase, Ajax Festival of the Arts, Integrated Community Arts and Cultural Plan, Art Exhibitions, Local Arts and Cultural Groups, Juried Art Show, Recreation, Arts and Culture Advisory Committee, Restoration of St. Francis de Sales Church, Photography Contest, and Public Art. Ajax Arts Festival is celebrated on a yearly basis. Here, kids can dress up in costumes, make arts and crafts or play with musical instruments. grown-ups can go to the main stage for some musical performances. Art Exhibitions also thrive within Ajax City, and a lot could go to Exhibit West Hall, Town Hall Council Chamber Lobby Exhibit and McLean Community Centre. The Arts and Culture Plan identifies the necessary directions that would strategically map out a course towards a ten-year vision of where the arts and culture of Ajax will be. The Recreation, Arts and Culture Advisory Committee serves to support recreation service opportunities for all residents. Recreation Services is described in a broad sense which includes sport, arts & culture, general leisure programs and services. Public Art within Ajax is booming within the area, and artists who make fountains, sculptures, metal and glass work, paintings, furnishings, murals and architectural design elements are encouraged to give their proposed works to the Town. Among the most popular works nowadays consist of: Anchor Sculpture, Fountain Town Hall, Metalwork Gate-Town Hall, Vasika mhuri - McLean Community Centre, Veteran's Point Gardens, Teen Art Project - Waste Receptacles, Totem Pole - Duffins Trail, Totem Pole - Ajax Community Centre, Water Feature - The Keg Restaurant, Sculpture - BMW Durham, and many others.

Shopping was practically unheard of in the city of Ajax in the 40's, however the trends changed by the 70's. A lot of big shopping centers like the Hardwood Place mall, Ajax Plaza and the Clover Ridge Plaza, were built during this time. The next years likewise saw the development of retail shopping malls, like Transit Square, the Baywood Plaza, Discovery Bay Plaza, and Westney Heights Plaza. Recent years have seen the growth of its residential industry, and recession has not stopped it from continued growth. New developments in the area comprise North Hardwood Centre, the Higgins Industrial Park, Salem Road Business Park, and Westney Road Business Park.
