Salem is the capital of Oregon, a U.S. state on the Pacific coast. The city of Salem lies in the Willamette Valley and is bisected by the Willamette River. It serves as the county seat of Marion County. The city of Salem is in both Polk and Marion counties, with the river functioning as the boundary between counties. Salem is a mid-sized city - with 154,637 inhabitants, it is the third largest in the state of Oregon after Portland and Eugene.

Salem is the main city of the Salem Metropolitan Statistical Area, which has an estimated population of about 396,103. The bigger city of Portland is less than one hour away.

Salem was named the capital of Oregon Territory less than ten years after it was officially founded in 1842. The city of Salem took the title of state capital from the city of Oregon, but lost it for almost a year to Corvallis, before it finally regained its previous status. Salem was incorporated as a city during 1857, making it among the oldest communities within Oregon. The original name of the region was Chemeketa, a Native American word meaning "resting place" or "meeting".

The second and original capital building in the city of Salem both were destroyed by fires. One of the capital buildings was fashioned similar to the U.S. Capitol building and had a dome roof made of copper. The current Oregon State Capitol building was built in the year 1938. Its capital dome is surmounted by a gold-plated pioneer statue, referred to as the Oregon Pioneer.

Salem consists of several Educational Institutions, like for instance Corban University, Willamette University, Chemawa Indian School, Oregon School for the deaf and Chemeketa Community College. The city's largest pubic sector employer is the State of Oregon. Salem Hospital is the biggest private employer with almost 3,000 staff.

As a major agricultural food processing center, Salem serves as a focal point for the surrounding farming communities. Correctional facilities provide a large number of jobs. In addition to being the home of Oregon State Penitentiary, the only maximum security facility in Oregon State, Salem City has the head office of the Oregon Department of Corrections and four state correctional facilities.

Businesses which operate within Salem City comprise the T-Mobile Calling Center, GE Security, Wells Fargo Customer Contact Center, NORPAC Foods, Inc., Roth's Family Markets and Sanyo. The Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde run the Spirit Mountain Casino west of Salem City.
