Hillsboro is a city in Oregon State. Located in Washington County and part of the Portland metropolitan area, Hillsboro has a population of 91,611. Various high-technology businesses make up what is called in the area as the Silicon Forest.

The Tualatin Valley was initially occupied by the Atfalati tribe of the Kalapuya for thousands of years. The European-American settlers liked the area since it boasted a moderate weather condition, plentiful hunting, agricultural and fishing opportunities. A village was established by the year 1842. It was named in honor of David Hill, an Oregon politician.

The settler economy thrived due to railroad and the riverboat transportation on the Tualatin River, which came through in the early part of the 1870s. An interurban electric railway was constructed in the early part of the 1900s. These types of transportation, including highways, pushed the local population to approximately 2,000 by 1910 and approximately 5,000 by 1950.

The city of Hillsboro has a strong high-tech industry; a lot of these companies arrived in the 1980s. Important sectors are health care, retail sales, and agriculture. The region has production of grapes and a lot of wineries. Manufacturing is the leading employment sector with nearly one-forth the workforce hired in different manufacturing operations. 68% of personnel commute to work, with an average commute time of 24 minutes (one way).

As the center of Oregon's Silicon Forest, the city of Hillsboro is home to businesses like for instance Intel, that has a number of campuses, the biggest of which are Ronler Acres, hawthorn Farm and Jones farm. The business employs around 16,000 local people. Other companies operating in Hillsboro City comprise Credence Systems, Epson, Yahoo!, Sun Microsystems High-End Operations and Synopsys. Corporate headquarters for FEI Company, TriQuint Semiconductor, Planar Systems, Lattice semiconductor and RadiSys are located here. Hillsboro is home is home to the health Profession Campus of the Pacific University.

Hillsboro's recreational facilities include the Hillsboro Stadium and many parks. The National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) lists nine sites within Hillsboro. Hillsboro is served by light rail transit, the Hillsboro Airport and public buses.
